Thanksgiving week

When teaching children you have to be able to adapt to the learning styles of your students.  As a teacher you are almost a designer.  You have to be able to put together lessons that are interesting and well explained so that your students will learn what you are teaching them.  Most of these tools in chapter 8 would not be of use for physical education.  However there are many that would work for your core subjects.

Digital Storytelling is a great software that can be very useful for english classes.  However, as a physical education teacher I would not be able to use this.  Digital Storytelling is a software that focuses more on the activity side of learning.  Students can use this software to make stories and then share them with the class.  This tool teaches the students how to use technology, it also includes the reading and writing aspect of english.  This tool is also a great way to get the students doing some peer review assignments.

Making math more real to students is very important.  Children have a hard time realizing how important math is for the real world.  Giving them activities of situations they will be in when they get older and gain more responsibility will help with this.  The use of a graphing calculator is a good tool for students to use when dealing with graphs.  It will help them get a visual representation of what a set of numbers means for certain situations.  I feel that these palm piolets are a great tool as well.  The students can take survey's and then make a graph representing the outcome.  These are just some of the tools that will help make math more real to students.

I feel in certain situations T.V. is a great source to learn from.  however, when watching T.V. you are doing just that, watching T.V.  I feel that it is very important for students to learn from doing things on their own.  Such as hands on activities, using different tools to learn.  I feel that technology should be incorporated as well as learning from lecture.  The television can give you great step by step instruction on how to complete a task, but being able to successfully complete the task is just as important as knowing how to do it.

week 11

There are many important aspects to learning in the classroom.  It is very important for the children to get enthusiastic about learning in the classroom.  Active learning is a way for the students to get excited about learning.  Bring games or some type of way for the students to be active.  Children have a very short attention span so finding ways to keep them engaged is very important.  It is also very important to help the students discover on their own.  When a student figures something out or accomplishes something on their own they get excited and want to learn  more.  In having the students dicover things they will find themselves an identity.  It is important that the students find something that they want to do so they have the feeling and sense of identity.

I really like the new simulation systems that are out there today.  There are simulations for just about anything.  There are many simulation systems that can  be incorporated into the high school curriculum.  There is a biology simulation system that I have looked at online that is really interesting.  You can see the phases that a plant goes through on this system.  There are simulation builders that are also very interesting and possibly useful for school.  I know that when I was in high school I took an auto cad class that was very interesting.  It helped me learn how the auto cad system worked but at the same time I learned how to better and more effectivley use a computer.

I feel that the learning priciples and the simulations described in the book are a fun new way of learning.  I feel that these should definatly be incorporated into school curriculums.  These are fun ways to keep the attention of students and could also be a more effective way to teach them.

Week 7

There are many writing assignments that you can complete in the classroom to use new technology.  As a teacher you can have your students make a blogging site and have them write about certain things and have them respond to others in their class.  Power Point assignments are another great way to have your students write and teach others in their class.  The most basic thing you can have your students do it write a paper on microsoft word.  A way to make that assignment a little different is by having your students make a graph on microsoft excel to show what they wrote about.

There are many factors in making a powerpoint successful.  When  you construct a power point you want to be able to catch your audiences attention, but without dristracting them from learning the information.  A great way of doing this is by making sure your backround is not to over the top crazy.  At the same time you do not want it to be too bland because your audience will lose interest.  Another great way to catch the audiences attention is by having sounds and videos.  With the sounds you do not want them to carry on to long becasue it may cause a distraction.  With the videos, if you imput one you need to make sure that it has to do with the subject.

I feel that technology in the classroom is great for the students.  There are so many ways to have students write about things they learn in the classroom.  They learn new ways to share information with others.  I really like the microsoft power points.  I feel that this software is almost taking over in the teaching world.  This is a grreat way for students to be able to have what is learned in class.

Chapter 2 Blog

Personal digital assistants are handheld  computers.  The handheld computers are things like the Ipad or the palm piolet.  The personal digital assistants are a great way to keep organized in the classroom.  Teachers can map out their daily agendas so they know what they have to cover.  Teachers can also use the calenders on the handheld computers to send the students what events will be upcoming in the classroom.  Students can use these handheld computers to record the teachers audio lectures.  The Palm uses window opperating system, so the students can also use these handhelds to take notes and write down homework assignments.  Just like any other technology in the classroom, the handhelds can be a distraction.

Online surveys have become very popular in the american culture.  Online surveys are used to get the opinion of americans on many different things.  Politics use surveys to find out what the people will and will not support.  Companies use surveys to find out what the American people will and will not buy.  Online surveys could help us in the classroom because students can make surveys and then make graphs on their results.  Another great way to use surveys is for school districts to make a survey to find out what the general population feels the schools need improvement on.  Two good rules for writing a good survey are to avoid bias, and avoid long questions.  If these are included in surveys then the results will not be what you need.

Personal digial assistants are a great way for students to learn how to use technology.  These things can really make a classroom run better.  The only problem I have with these is that students often get off track, and with basically a mini computer in their hands they could really lose focus.  As far as the internet surveys go, I feel that these are very usful.  The survey is a great way to get an idea of the thinking of the general population.  The only problem I feel about surveys is that some surveys are bias and will be worded in a way that leads you to answer in a certain way.

Excel

In the past I have worked with microsoft excel.  When I first started working with it, it was difficult for me to get used to all the tools it has.  Now that I have spent some time with it, I really like this program.  I feel that excel is a useful tool that all teachers should learn how to use.  There are so many ways to use this software that will save a great amount of time in the classroom and with grading.  I will definatley use microsoft Excel when I get a teaching job.

As a teacher we can use excel for many things, we can use it for a gradebook, and we can use it for classroom projects.  The advantage of using a spreadsheet over a calculator is thta the excel program will do all of your calculations for you.  In the book it talks about the three primary functions of excel spreadsheet.  I think all three would be very useful for a teacher.  I am not sure what else  you can use excel for but now that I know how to use it im sure i will find different ways to use this program to mine and the students advantage.

Assignment 3 Blog Posting

After watching the inspiration video I really liked this idea.  I would really be able to use something like that for brainstorming.  The inspiration even puts together an outline of what you are doing while you are working on your assignment.  I think I could really use this in the classroom.  When you are making a chart or table explaining something to the students the system automatically makes an outline for you.  This would help you as well as the students in understanding the material better.

I would say that this system would best be used for things like book reviews and taking notes for chapters out of your assigned readings.  I am still mainly focused on the fact that it puts an outline together for everything you do.  That has to be one of the best complements to a writing system that I have seen so far.  So not only will the student turn in their brainstorm but with it would come an outline of everything they have done.   This would make it much easier for the teacher to make corrections and for the student to fix the corrections.

All in all I think that the inspiration technology is the best writing system that has come out yet.  This is a high quality system that would help the students and the teacher.  The only thing that I could see as an issue with this is that it has to be expensive.  And the way the economy is and the rough times that everyone is facing, it is hard to get this system in the classroom.  But if this was accessable to me as a teacher I would definatley use this program.

Intro

Ok so im Daniel, I am new to this whole blogging thing.  I am not a huge fan of this whole blogging thing but its not hard to do.  I can see how this blog thing can be used in the classroom.  I personally do not thing I would use this as a teacher but it does seem to be an effective way of getting things done.

DanielStantz

Personally my oppinion on blog postings is that I do not like how this works.  I don't have a real reason for not liking this, I'm just not a fan of blogging.  I feel for some kids that blogging might be useful because it is kind of a fun way to communicate with your classmates.  Also when you post a blog everyone can see what you had to say.  With this you can get more responses and feedback from other people that are not in your class.  I can see how some people think that blogging is a waste of time.  But even though I do not like the blogging thing, there is a lot of good feedback that the students may get from outside sources.

Technology is a very big thing these days in the classroom.  Technology can be used to support your curriculum as a teacher.  As a teacher you can better communicate with your students with blogging and email.   An example of helping a teacher, for a geography class the kids can use the internet to find games and maps to look at.  English teachers can post a blog for their students to look at and correct the grammer and punctuation.  Like I said before, I am not a big blogger fan but it can help the learning process for kids, and it is a fun way to do school work.
